UZ Wolves leave for Egypt

THE University of Zimbabwe Wolves men’s team yesterday left the country for Egypt for the Confederation of African Volleyball Continental Senior Club Championships with vivid memories of the recent disaster that befell the country in mind.

Zimbabwe was plunged into mourning last week after tropical Cyclone Idai-induced floods and winds caused damage in Manicaland Province and in particularly Chimanimani and Chipinge.

At least over 300 people lost their lives while thousands were left injured and homeless as most buildings in the area were destroyed.

More people could have lost their lives because rescuers are yet to access some of the areas due to damaged roads.
The Zimbabwe Open Volleyball tournament that was scheduled for Gweru this weekend has also been postponed since the country is currently trying to come to terms with disaster.

The Wolves, who finished in second place at the Zone V Championships last year, will be representing southern Africa in Egypt and will also honour the victims of the cyclone during their time in North Africa.

“Zim Open was cancelled, the nation is still mourning and we are going to dedicate this campaign to all those who lost their lives in this natural disaster and to the injured we wish them speedy recovery,” UZ Wolves assistant coach Memory Dube told the Daily News shortly before the team’s departure for Egypt yesterday.

“Regarding the African Championships, we are ready and this time we will get dirty. Last year it was a year of trial and error but this time we know what to expect and how we should present ourselves as well.”

Wolves team manager Norest Matambanadzo said: “With regards to the much awaited highly-esteemed CAVB Club Championships, I’m impressed with the standard shown by the team.

“It remains a monumental task to give a prediction of how we are going to perform but I’m confident with the frantic efforts of the technical team, players and the administration at large.”
