Miss Albinism pageant dates set

THIS year’s edition of beauty pageant, Miss Albinism Zimbabwe, has been scheduled for May 24 at Cresta Lodge in Msasa, Harare.

The May 24 event will feature 30 models living with albinism.
“We have 20 girls and 10 boys. This year’s pageant is a bit different and exciting as we are going to co-host Miss and Mr Albinism.

“This comes after the realisation that challenges facing girls and boys living with albinism are different hence we need a boy who will represent and advocate for others in the society,” Miss Albinism Zimbabwe pageant director Brenda Mudzimu said.

The inaugural pageant, ran under the theme “Beauty beyond the Skin”, was held last year at Longcheng Plaza in Harare and University of Zimbabwe social work student Stembiso Mutukura was adjudicated the winner.

Miss Albinism pageant is meant to increase awareness on the condition and reduce stigma.
Zimbabwe became the second country in the continent to host such an event after Kenya.

According to United Nations, more than 600 people living with albinism have been attacked in the sub-Sahara region and this attack was fuelled by unfounded myths.

Some believe having sex with albino ladies cure HIV and Aids while others say sleeping with people living with albinism enhances one’s fortunes in life.

Zimbabwe is said to have 39 000 people living with albinism.
Albinism is a defect of melanin production that results in little or no colour (pigment) in the skin, hair and eyes of a person.
