Cancerserve Golf Day tees off

CANCERSERVE Trust inaugural Golf Day tees off this morning at Chapman Golf Club as the non-profit-making organisation seeks to raise funds for related cases in the country.

The tournament is open to every participant who is willing to contribute towards the fight against cancer. Participants, however, are required to pay participation fee of $60 per individual and $240 for a team.

Cancerserve founder and chairperson Anna Nyakabau, a cancer specialist based at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals said they came together with like-minded individuals to form the Trust in order to identify and collaboratively address gaps in cancer care.

“Worldwide, Zimbabwe included the incidence of cancer is increasing. The impact of this increase is more catastrophic in developing countries such as Zimbabwe fuelling cancer-associated stigma and its adverse consequences. Unfortunately, the majority of cancers present at an advanced stage in a background of limited resources,” Nyakabau said.

It is more cost-effective to prevent cancer. Cancer early detection and treatment saves lives. Treating advanced cancer is expensive and outcomes are poorer. Thus there is need for us all to contribute to increasing awareness on cancer and its preventive measures, screening of relevant cancers suitable for screening and availing appropriate treatment to affected persons.”

The Trust is made up of 17 board members from diverse backgrounds including cancer survivors and the tournament is being run in conjunction with the Institute of Golf Africa.
“In fact there is need for coordinated, multi-sectral, comprehensive cancer control programs with support from all to fight the war on cancer,” she added.

“The objective is to bring together medical professionals, cancer survivors, health-care stakeholders, family members affected by cancer and well-wishers to support efforts to improve the management, awareness, prevention, treatment and control of cancer in Zimbabwe.”
