Castle Africa 5-A-side returns

The Castle Africa 5-A-aside tournament continues to flex its muscles on the continent with organisers of the event yesterday announcing a bigger and better tournament this year that will see women also taking part.

Three more countries Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda will join Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe for this year’s tournament whose continental finals will be held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Winners of the Castle Africa 5s will then be rewarded with an all-expenses paid trip to Milan, Italy to watch a Serie A football match, hosted by Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o.
Eto’o is the tournament’s brand ambassador while former Warriors and Kaizer Chiefs midfield enforcer Tinashe Nengomasha is the country ambassador for the local tournament.

This year’s tournament, in its second year, will feature a women’s tourney, with former Banyana Banyana star Amanda Dhlamini, coming in as the brand ambassador for the women’s league.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s tournament Delta Beverages Marketing executive Irimayi Muzorewa said: “…following the success of the inaugural Castle Lager Africa 5s last year, we are launching the second edition of the Castle Africa 5s Zimbabwe Edition.

“Last year, Zimbabwe finished third in the continental finals in Lusaka, Zambia.

“This will be the largest 5-A-side amateur football tournament in the country and will be played across Zimbabwe.
“What we love about five-a-side football is how it brings people together in the spirit of friendship and camaraderie. While sport will always be a competitive endeavour, we know that five-a-side football by its very nature is about the social experience and connecting with your inner circle.

“In 2019, the tournament will run across nine countries in Africa (up from six last year): Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria being the latest nations to join in addition to Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
“The Castle Africa 5s will be played at country level with play-offs in each country and culminate in the continental finals that will take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.”

To take part in the action, those interested should register a team of six at participating outlets around the country and the chosen lucky teams will take part in the local play-offs to be held between April and May.
Delta Beverages through its Castle Lager brand has been involved in local football for many years dating back to the pre-independence days.

The company has been the Premier Soccer League’s official sponsor for the eighth year now with the current deal set to end next year but current indications point to another renewal.
South Africa won the tournament last year, and the team had the privilege to watch the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia as part of the package for their triumphant campaign in Zambia.
