Mhofu pours heart out

HARARE - Warriors coach Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa yesterday poured his heart out saying he is worried by reports from some sections of the media that he receives kickbacks from players to include them in the national team.

The veteran coach made his thoughts known yesterday at the announcement of the Warriors’ provisional squad for the crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Congo set for March 24, at the National Sports Stadium.

There has been criticism on the coach’s selection with some sections feeling some players are not deserving of national team call-ups.
The former Dynamos coach said he is open for criticism but reports of bribes were absurd.

“We are open to suggestions and constructive criticism but some reports are disturbing. Some even said I get money from players for them to be included into the national team. As it stands, there is need for unity and cooperation from everyone,” he said.

Chidzambwa, 67, said he is in the twilight of his career and would wish for an honourable retirement. “I’m 67 and I will retire soon and I would wish to rest in honour,” he said. The veteran gaffer guided the Warriors to their first ever Afcon competition in 2004 and is on the verge of guiding the team for the second time should his charges manage at least a draw against Congo.

He said qualifying for the 2019 edition will be important for him as a coach and hailed the support from the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa). “This will be important to me as a coach to guide the team to a second Afcon. Also important is the support from the board,” he said.

The allegations may be unfounded Mhofu. But at times you bring such suspicions on yourself through some questionable selections. When you took the team to Tunisia a few years ago, can you honestly claim that Wilfred Mugeyi deserved to be part of that cast of in-form warriors. I secretly lamented his inclusion and wasn't the least surprised when he missed a seater when it appeared more difficult to miss than score. Akanga atopera Mugeyi but you took him with you. I think you are among the top three national team coaches with have had in Zim. All you need is protect your integrity by being extra careful with your selection. You have the ultimate say in the whole business but consulting your subordinates is quite helpful. Ita zvinoita kuti usafungirwa zvisizvo Mhofu. Otherwise you have been doing a good job given the material available and the level of support extended by those concerned.
