Junior triathletes win in SA

HARARE – Local junior triathlon stars Andie Kuipers and Matt Denslow gave a good account of themselves after getting podium finishes at the Discovery World Cup Cape Town event in South Africa over the weekend.

Kuipers was second in the girls Under 19 category claiming silver while Denslow settled for bronze medal in the boy’s division.

“A fantastic effort from Andie and Matt…well done you two, very proud,” Triathlon Zimbabwe juniors head coach Pam Fulton posted on Facebook yesterday.

Prior to the race on Sunday, the two Zimbabwe athletes, together with athletes drawn from six African countries,  went through a workshop on the development and preparations for the Under 23 and elite level racing. The countries included Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Mauritius and hosts South Africa.

They returned home yesterday ahead of this weekend’s inaugural Bonaqua ATU Troutbeck Junior African Cup that is set to run concurrently with the ATU Sprint Triathlon Africa Cup in Nyanga.

“The Junior athletes from Tunisia, South Africa, Mauritius and Egypt will also be competing at Troutbeck. Matt and Andie have raced against these same athletes in 2018 at the African Triathlon Championships in Morocco where they both finished fourth hence narrowly missing out on qualifying to compete at Youth Olympics Games 2018,” Fulton said earlier.

“They then competed against the same athletes, excluding South Africa, at the Africa Youth Games where they both won Silver medals. The World Cup Cape Town event will be the first race all these nations compete against each other since April 2018, so it proves for some very exciting racing.

“The standard of racing will be exceptionally high in the Junior African Cup event due to the various African nations being present.

“Andie, Matt, Mikayla Colegrave and Marcel Paulser have competed at this level before but it will be a new experience for the likes of Erin Elliot, Luke Hacker, Luke Steffens, Jordyn Jacobs and Matt Palmer who all compete in the U17 category but will be competing with the U19 category in Troutbeck.

“Andie and Matt have every chance of medalling in Troutbeck. Erin is an exceptional athlete and should fare well against the U19 field and medal in the U17 field.

“The U17 male contingent including Marcel are very competitive whereby any one of them could win the U17 category on the day.”
