TZ braces for Africa Cup

HARARE - The 2019 Bonaqua Troutbeck ATU Sprint Triathlon African Cup set for February 16, promises to be bigger and better with a record number of athletes having registered for the elite men and women’s races, Triathlon Zimbabwe (TZ) said.

At least 21 elite men and nine elite women from last year’s 15 and five respectively are expected to descend on the hilly and scenic Nyanga resort for the Olympics points meet.

“With just under a month to go…the start list is the largest ever to visit this now established African Triathlon event. An international field consisting of 21 elite men and 9 elite women are now registered to travel and compete at Troutbeck on 16 February 2019,” TZ said in a statement.

TZ celebrated 11 years since the Troutbeck African Cup opened its shores to the world subsequently making it the longest running event in Africa.

German’s Breinlinger Germany and Cindy Schwulst of South Africa were gold medallists in their respective elite men and women categories.

This was after three attempts for Schwulst in which she finished second on all the occasions between 2015 and 2017.

Nicholas Free of Australia was the men’s first runner-up while Namibia’s Jean-Paul Burger ensured that Africa had every reason to celebrate the milestone with a podium third place finish.

Zimbabwe elite men debutant Gideon Benade did not disappoint with a 12th place finish while veteran Rory Mackie making a comeback after a lengthy lay off settled for position 14.

In the women category Jayme-Sue Vermaas of South Africa raced her way to second place ahead Yan Yin Hilda Choi of Hong Kong and Maude Elaine Le Roux (RSA) while their fellow country mate Shanae Williams who had the misfortune of a tyre puncture having lead the race from the swim did not finish the race.

“In addition, an inaugural ATU Junior Triathlon African Cup will also be staged at the same venue which will see Zimbabwe hosting junior elite athletes from Egypt, Tunisia, Mauritius, Namibia and South Africa,” TZ said.

“Supporting events on the day include an African Cross-Triathlon (off-road) Championship, Corporate Team Triathlon Challenge, Zimbabwe Triathlon Championships over a number of events, Tri-Kidz and Trisports triathlon, Aquathlon (run-swim-run) and an Open Water Swim.”
