New Avondale pub haven for local artists, smokin' Texas barbecue

HARARE - A new upmarket joint in Avondale has become a haven for several artists, from comedians to musicians, boasting good and tender barbeque.

The joint, Chef T Texas BBQ located on 49 Cork Road, has become popular because of its natural setting which is different from the hard-core club environment. It’s set in a serene environment that can easily accommodate even non-club goers.

And it offers the best Texas-style barbecue. This pub exudes an atmosphere that only enhances the flavour of the meat, which is tender and succulent.

Chef T Texas BBQ has brought old-country meat-smoking and meat-making traditions as well as off-the-chains entertainment to Avondale.

That’s the brilliance of this place.

The new joint is being seen by many as a direct replacement of the once famous Book Café because of its menu including comedy nights and musical concerts.

Every Tuesday, the joint hosts Comedy Nights featuring the likes of Doc Vikela, Charles Manase, King Kandoro, Kadem the Comic and Saint Patrick.

Wednesday is a day set for Afro-fusion music lovers.

The venue has also become home to Alexio Kawara, the Zimbabwean contemporary Afro-fusion musician and lead member of the band Shades of Black, and he is popularising the “KuChina’”concept.

Fridays have been set as a prep for the weekend with what is called the “After-work drink up”.

Sundays are reserved for reggae lovers.

“This has become a place for several artists and those who enjoy entertainment in a free environment.

Each and every day has its own events which make us unique. Many know the place at 49 Cork Road,” said one of the proprietors Khali Lazarus who runs the place with Tamuka Gwatidzo.

Tamuka, the Texas-trained chef at the joint, chalks up the success of this pub to a lot of superb cuisine.

“All we say is in one-foot step, escape the city and enter into a natural atmosphere surrounded by a garden full of trees, plants and a waterfall. Imagine yourself in the countryside, sharing BBQ with family recipes from different parts of the world — Asian, European, American and even our local recipes at affordable prices,” he said.

The proprietors believe they offer an escape platform from the busy and madding crowds characterising the city centre.

“This is an opportunity to share precious moments in nature with your friends and family, forgetting about the busy modern world and noisy city side.

“We love the energy and buzz that you can feel when seated at Chef T Texas BBQ sharing a meal with hundreds of our guests.

“We allow people to forget a moment and enjoy a healthy meal with a large smile.

“This is why we developed The Chef T Texas BBQ Garden,” he said.
