Volleyball League enters Week 3

HARARE - The Zimbabwe National Volleyball League (ZNVL) enters its third week with matches scheduled for today and tomorrow at ZRP Support Unit in the capital.

This marks the end of the first round for this uniquely-designed league that has national league matches being played once a month and six rounds in total in its entire duration.

As such, teams will be buoyed to end the first round of matches on a high note to gain an advantage getting into the second round. The matches are set to run from 9am to 5pm.

The main attraction will be the men’s league encounter pitting host Support Unit against early pacesetters and log leaders UZ Wolves.

Support Unit are the current holders of the Sadc Region 5 Club championships (Zone 6) while Wolves are the silver medallists for the same competition.

This will be a replay of the 2017 Club Championship final.

On the women’s front, Harare City, gold medallists of the Zone 6 Club Championships, will lock horns with Support Unit.

“We are expecting fireworks this weekend as teams are now racing for the league title as well as to secure a place at this year’s edition of the Zone 6 Club Championship in Durban, South Africa,” head of corporate affairs for Zimbabwe Volleyball Association, Nothando Magwaza told the Daily News.

“Basically it’s about teams racing for the title. Some teams have already qualified though because number one and two have automatic qualification to Zone 6.”

UZ Wolves opened a slender lead in the ZNVL for both male and female teams after two weekends of action.

Wolves’ men lead the table with 14 points followed by Support Unit on 12 points and Harare City on 10 while their women counterparts lead with nine points followed by Spartans on eight points and Harare City on six.
