Bright future for film industry

HARARE - Veteran filmmaker Stephen Chigorimbo, believes the country’s film industry is ahead of others in Africa.

Chigorimbo said the country is full of young talented and artistic filmmakers which gives hope to the movie industry.

The renowned entertainer was part of the speakers at an event organised by Africa Innovation Trust in partnership with Jive Zimbabwe appealing for recognition from the new Arts minister, Kirsty Coventry.

“Just like any other industry, the movie industry is hopeful.

Zimbabweans are very artistic and we have a new crop of young filmmakers who are doing excellent work.

“I work with people from the US who have been in acting schools but some people here have never been to an acting school but the work they do is great,” he said.

He said the passion in a number of filmmakers in Zimbabwe will take the industry forward and called on for support.

“We have people who have sacrificed a lot, used their own resources and well-wishers who have contributed to the growth of the industry.

“We will continue appealing for support to enable the growth of the industry,” he said.

He pointed out that there are a number of local productions that can compete on an international level.

“There are several productions and one day I was watching Kushata Kwemoyo, a local production by a young filmmaker, it is excellent and can compete on an international level,” he said.

Chigorimbo said the movie industry has become a source of livelihood for many people in the country.

“Gone are the days when people used to do the arts just for the love of it. Now people understand the business aspect of the arts. It is now creating employment for the youth,” he said.
