Council shuts down contaminated borehole

MUTARE - Mutare City Council (MCC) has closed a borehole in Sakubva sunk by a senior MDC official in the run-up to the just-ended harmonised election after laboratory tests revealed it was contaminated.

“We shut it down after we conducted some laboratory tests that showed that it was contaminated,” said Spren Mutiwi, the public relations officer for MCC, without disclosing the possible sources of the impurity.

The borehole had been sunk by Mutare Central Member of Parliament, Innocent Gonese.

The local authority is on high alert in the wake of a typhoid outbreak that hit Gweru this month, forcing it to introduce a raft of measures to insulate its residents against risks of contracting the disease.

Gonese told the Daily News yesterday that council had approved of its sinking near Matida Flats.

“This was unforeseen as we had worked closely with it (HCC) in setting it up in line with council regulations,” Gonese said.
