Mountaineers warm up for title

HARARE - Defending champions Mountaineers take on Rising Stars in their last Logan Cup match of the season this weekend at Takashinga Sports Club knowing that the title is virtually wrapped up.

Mountaineers breathed a sigh of relief after log leaders Mashonaland Eagles who had emerged serious contenders for the title suffered a huge dent in their title aspirations following a 354-run defeat against Matabeleland Tuskers in Bulawayo last weekend.

The result saw the Eagles claiming a one-point lead over Mountaineers in second place, the Mutare side, however, play their final game this weekend while for Eagles that was their last chance to fight for the title as they exhausted their games allocation with that disappointing defeat at Queens Sports Club.

Mountaineers need just two points to retain the title for the second time in a row and are buoyed by the return of Hamilton Masakadza who is back from a shoulder injury.

The two sides lock horns in the Pro 50 Championship match tomorrow then have a rest day on Friday before tussling out in the Logan Cup starting on Saturday.

“Yes we need just two points and we still have to earn the points. The prospects are now brighter after that result against Mid West Rhinos where we did not play our best cricket resulting in our first defeat of the season, hopefully we can rectify our mistakes and wrap up the championship at Takashinga,” Mountaineers head coach Shepherd Makunura told the Daily News yesterday.

“We were also affected a great deal by the departure of some of our players who went overseas and Hamilton Masakadza missed the four-day game due to a shoulder injury but he’s back from injury now and it is a big boost.”
