NFZBBF ready for Novice with a difference

HARARE - The National Federation of Zimbabwe Bodybuilding and Fitness (NFZBBF) say they have raised the bar and are setting up a contest as none before when they host this year’s edition of the bodybuilding for beginners contest, the Novice Championship.

Our Daily News on Sunday sports writer Austin Karonga tracked down NFZBBF secretary-general Quiet Shangai who this year has been very quiet by his standards to find out what is in store for bodybuilding and fitness fanatics come month end. Below are excerpts of the interview:

Q: Great to meet you again Quiet Shangai. You have been quiet as your name. How have you been?
A: I am good and I trust you are good too. It has been a busy first quarter of 2018. We are trying to make things happen.

Q: I am fine thank you. I understand you are organising a Novice event with a difference. What is the difference between the 2018 edition and other editions?
A: First and foremost I would like to explain the rationale behind hosting a Novice competition. Novice is a developmental competition. It is for first timers. It is
therefore meant to allow novices to compete alone. It should also allow first time judges to have the opportunity to judge. Now these are process outputs if you ask me. They are not supposed to be the final outputs. The outputs for a novice event should not be to crown champions either.Crowning champions is part of the process. The real outputs of a Novice event should be empowered, educated, motivated and equipped athletes as well as new judges. The outcome should be increased participation; hence the impact should be visible, functional and sustainable fitness industry. It does not make bodybuilding and fitness sense if Novice aims to crown champions and then nothing more. Such a Novice event will not have ticked all the boxes of a “developmental event”

Q: Can we say we have been ensuring that all the expectations of Novice were met in the past?
A: To a certain extent, yes. However, we have been concentrating more on general education with regards to important aspects. This kind of an approach may allow for sustainable development but not to a greater extent; hence the new approach. In light of the above, this year we are having a judges’ seminar, our usual seminar on training, supplementation and nutrition as well as education on posing and career paths with regards to suitable divisions for the competing athletes.
The final issue is very important. We have observed that with the coming in of various divisions most people are not aware of the kind of physiques that suits these divisions. It is therefore very important to educate each individual athlete with regards to the right path to take in as far as categories are concerned. We will also open up on the various opportunities available in the fitness industry.

Q: You have just spoken about various opportunities. I thought the career ends on stage? (Laughing). Can you shed more light on this?
A: The fitness industry from a public administration point of view (which is where us the administration belongs to) is all about community development at the end of the day. Development means positive change. So our performance is measured on how we have managed to bring positive change with regards to bodybuilding and fitness.
Having said that, it is very important to note that athletes have got a life to live after all has been said and done. It is therefore imperative to educate these potential and veteran athletes on available opportunities so that they get exposed. Most people are not rich not because they are lazy but because they are not exposed. If we do not educate these athletes on these important aspects we risk having athletes who aim to win a competition, get money, buy a car and a house, invest some in a life assurance account and go home and sleep. This is what we need to erase in peoples’ minds and create a people who are exposed, empowered and capacitated. I believe it is more important than anything else.

Q: I think I am getting you. Can you just highlight on these opportunities?
A: (Laughing). We risk doing the seminar now. Basically the Fitness industry like any other industry has what we may refer to as a value chain. The fitness industry aims at having fit and healthy individuals whether functional or competing. If you look at that you will then see that there are many players who should then complement each other in achieving that vision. Examples are sportswear shops, supplement distributors, health spars, gyms, personal training, boot camps, nutritionist, aerobics instructors, fitness industry, media etc. The industry is quite broad. I believe one will definitely have somewhere to fit. Unfortunately certain culprits (laughing) have reduced the industry to the gym alone thereby discouraging participation. That misconception must come to an end.

Q: In terms of preparations how far have you gone?
A: Let me say this without mincing my words. We are more than ready. Since I joined NFZBBF as an administrator I have never been involved in an event that we are so ready like this one. I am proud to say former athletes and active athletes who have invested in the industry are coming on board and these are Fitness V Series, Musclerage, Beast Finnese, MuscleXlusive and GS Fitness Academy. We also have Cafe Nush and Confectioners, Generations Shop Fitters, Lovemore Mupfukwa and other friends who do not want to be published. I have got a feeling that this will be the best Novice ever.
