Zifa lifts Dube suspension

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) finally lifted the suspension imposed on former Highlanders and Premier Soccer League chairperson Peter Dube at last weekend’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The association also lifted the suspension of former women’s football boss Cecilia Gambe.

Zifa announced that the suspensions imposed on the two had now been lifted with immediate effect. Zifa had suspended Dube in December 2016 for “inappropriate conduct” during the association’s congress.

Gambe was suspended during the same year for bringing the game into disrepute when she invaded the pitch while protesting against what she deemed was unfair match officiating by the referee who was handling a league match involving Mutare City Rovers and How Mine.

But speaking after the weekend’s AGM, Zifa legal advisor Itai Ndudzo said: “There are two things that I want you to appreciate and the constitution is very clear. If you are suspended in between congresses you are supposed to go a disciplinary process to determine your fate.

“So the first point you must note is that if you get to the next congress without the matter having been determined you are automatically restored to your position.

“There was also Cecilia Gambe, she also went through the disciplinary process and the congress was advised that she has since served her penalty.

“So in terms of disciplinary matters Peter Dube’s suspension falls away because of no disciplinary hearing conducted that is the position of the constitution which congress has noted and that Gambe’s suspension has been lifted.”

Ndudzo continued: “I want you to understand the point that the discipline that Peter Dube met was on the basis of him being a member of Zifa or coming from a member of Zifa which is Highlanders Football Club.

“I want you to understand that Highlanders is a member of Zifa in its own right and if it’s delegate to congress is suspected of having breached the football statutes, Zifa has the competence to apply disciplinary measures so it related to his conduct as a member of Highlanders.

“But as to what becomes of his position in Highlanders or in the Premier Soccer League we cannot speak on behalf of both institutions.”
