Hiring of debt collectors opposed

HARARE - The engagement of external debt collection services by Chitungwiza municipality which claims to be owed about $60 million by residents and business combined is against the wishes of many ratepayers, council budget consultative meetings showed.

The Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents Association (Camera) said: “We also implore the council to consider the harsh economic environment that the residents are operating in which is manifesting through high unemployment levels, cash shortages and basic commodities price hikes among other challenges that the citizens are forced to compete with at the moment.

“The Chitungwiza municipality must draw lessons from the City of Harare where the engagement of Wellcash debt collectors ignited a plethora of disputes between the local authority and its clients.”
