Hornets maintain form

HARARE - Harare City Hornets continued with their fine form in the Harare Basketball League (HBL) following this weekend’s back-to-back impressive wins against UZ Stars and Hustlers to move second on the log table.

Hornets were in no nonsense mood as they thumped UZ Stars 80-39 before a convincing 86-46 victory over Hustlers; their fourth and fifth wins in five matches they have played this season.

Those two victories took their tally to 10 points, two behind log leaders Foxes who are on the top of the log with 12 points having won all their six matches played thus far.

However, crucially for Hornets they have a game in hand which could put them at par with Foxes.

Hornets never showed any signs of rust despite returning to local action for the first time following their participation at the Fiba Africa Club Championships Preliminaries in Botswana last month where they made history by becoming the first local club to earn a fifth place.

In Botswana, Hornets registered two wins against Troopers (90-47) and Dolphins (75-53) both from Botswana while losing four times to Libolo (98-54) and Inter Clube (97-61) who are both from Angola as well as Ferroviario de Maputo (71-63) and Ferroviario de Beira (84-71) of Mozambique.

Hornets assistant coach Mike Nhira believes they got invaluable experience from the Fiba Africa Club Championships Preliminaries while lauding his charges for weekend’s thumping victories.

“In Botswana, we had gone to learn and the trip obviously served the purpose,” Nhira said.

“We played some of the best teams in Africa and I think we did our best. We hope to improve if we do qualify for next assignments. We came back and at the weekend the boys did very well by picking up two big wins.”
