Musona, Chigova out of Warriors squad

HARARE - Warriors captain and forward Knowledge Musona will miss the side’s two friendly internationals against Lesotho and Namibia after picking up an ankle injury at the weekend.

Another injury worry for the Warriors is goalkeeper George Chigova, who has been ruled out after picking up an injury in Polokwane City’s Telkom Cup penalty shoot-out win over Orlando Pirates on Saturday night.

Musona was injured during his Belgian side KV Oostende’s 4-2 win over Zulte-Waregem on Sunday night.

The Zimbabwe captain had scored for his side in the 28th minute before he was replaced by Richairo Zivkovic with 12 minutes to go.

“Musona is definitely out and he is scheduled to go for a scan tomorrow (today). We had issued a ticket for him to fly directly to Johannesburg but these things do happen,” Warriors team manager Wellington Mpandare said yesterday.

“The reason why Musona and (Marvellous) Nakamba were not flying straight to Zimbabwe was because they were playing on Sunday evening.

“They were only getting home around 10pm so we were to link up with them in Johannesburg but Musona is definitely not coming. We will only know the extent of his injury after the scans.”

Warriors’ interim coach Wilson Mtekede has called up CAPS United midfielder Devon Chafa to replace Musona.

Chigova had an eventful 35 minutes for Rise and Shine before he was substituted when he suffered a cut on his leg.

Rodney Ramagalela had played in a beautiful cross for Rendani Ndou, who headed home from inside the box to give Polokwane the lead.

However, the Sea Robbers equalised following a mistake by the City defence allowing Ntsikelelo Nyauza a clear passage to goal.

Chigova then made a monumental blunder when he parried a weak shot onto the path of Pirates forward Thamsanqa Gabuza.

In a bid to try and make amends, Chigova brought down Gabuza and referee Victor Gomes pointed to the spot.

In the process, Chigova sustained a cut on his right leg but showed great character as he went on to save Mpho Makola’s penalty kick before he was replaced by Harold Ndlovu.

“As for Chigova, we are yet to meet with the technical team to decide on a replacement goalkeeper,” Mpandare said.

The Warrior are scheduled to leave today for Maseru, Lesotho via Johannesburg ahead of tomorrow’s evening match against the Crocodiles.

Zimbabwe will return to Harare on Thursday before leaving for Windhoek, Namibia the following day.

The Warriors are scheduled to take on the Brave Warriors on Saturday before returning home on Sunday.
