Summer 7s rugby tourney on cards

HARARE - The local rugby community will this weekend host a Summer 7s rugby tournament with a difference aimed at raising funds for the construction of a rugby facility in Chitungwiza.

Chitungwiza-based club side Southern City are spearheading the initiative as they want to realise their dream of having their own home ground in Harare’s dormitory town.

All the Inter City League sides are expected to converge at Harare Sports Club this weekend to battle it out for the honours in this tournament.

These include Old Georgians, Old Hararians, Old Johannians, and Harare Sports Club, as well as Ancient City, Tobacco Industries, Mbare and ladies teams.

“We are trying to raise funds and the need to have a basic rugby facility in Chitungwiza. We have identified a piece of land currently being used as a soccer field but neglected,” Southern City representative Carlton Majuru told the Daily News.

“Participating teams will pay a nominal fee of $40 to cover the running costs considering that we will be hiring the Harare Sports Club field, ambulance services and payment of referees and we are therefore inviting corporates and individuals alike to help us in this worthwhile cause.”

Majuru said the money needed to come up with a field of their own in Chitungwiza will be just above $20 000 and tomorrow’s event will serve as the launching pad to this journey.

“In terms of figures, we need a significant amount and if we were to get a minimum of $20 000, we will be in a position to put up a basic facility, there’s virtually no rugby facility in Chitungwiza with a population of a million plus people.”
