Nyumbu rattles Rising Stars

KWEKWE - Spinner John Nyumbu picked up four wickets as Matabeleland Tuskers bundled out youthful Rising Stars for 247 runs on the first day of their Logan Cup match on Sunday.

At stumps Tuskers were on 18 for no loss with Brian Chari on 14 and Mduduzi Fuzwayo on one while trailing by 229 runs.

Tuskers elected to field after winning the toss and national team fringe player Nyumbu got Rising Stars on the rocks with four wickets while Ernest Masuku and Tafadzwa Mboyi picked two wickets apiece.

Rising Stars' wicketkeeper batsman Taffy Mupariwa scored a defiant 78 runs at top of the order as he sorely architected the newboys' slow rise in the big boys' league since making their debut against Mid West Rhinos at the same venue earlier this month.

Captain Tarisai Musakanda chipped in with 31 in the middle order while Brandon Mavuta scored a decent half century when he reached 60 at the tail.

Their first innings score of 247 in this four-day match is the highest total Rising Stars have made in the five innings they have batted in Zimbabwe’s premier First Class competition which should give coach Stuart Matsikenyeri a lot of optimism going into today’s second day.

Play resumes this morning on day two with Tuskers looking to overhaul the 229-run deficit and get an early lead in this match.

Rising Stars will be looking forward to defend their score and build towards a respectable total when they come in to bat for the second innings.
