Majarira tipped for top honours

HARARE - Warriors fringe striker Blessing Majarira has emerged as the favourite to walk away with the top gong when Zifa Northern Region Division One champions Herentals host their awards gala tonight.

Herentals were promoted into the Castle Lager Premiership after clinching the lower league title with seven matches to spare.

Today, the club will be presented with their trophy at Rufaro Stadium before their match against Harare City Cubs.

The Students will then proceed to their Chitungwiza campus after the match for their annual awards ceremony where several players will be honoured in different categories for their exploits during the campaign.

But it is Majarira, who caught the eye for the Students with his sterling work upfront making him the odds-on favourite for the Player of the Year award.

Majarira’s form for the side saw him being included in the Warriors squad that went on to lift the Cosafa Castle Cup in South Africa in June.

Already Majarira is guaranteed of the Golden Boot award after scoring the highest number of goals en-route to Herentals’ promotion.

And while Majarira is being tipped for the top prize, the club’s owner Innocent Benza is also likely to walk away with the Most Hardworking Player gong.

Innocent, who is the co-owner with his twin brother Gerald, defied his age of 45 as he featured in 80 percent of the side’s matches this season.

There is also going to be other categories for the Most Improved Player, Most Loyal Player, Most Consistent Player among others.

Herentals secretary-general Kuda Remba said their players deserved to be honoured after an unbelievable season.

“What we have done is that we have organised a number of activities including a soccer tournament for our schools,” Remba said.

“We will start in the CBD with a march from our campus to Simon Muzenda Street and we will also tour some of the locations which house our schools like Warren Park, Glen Norah, Kuwadzana, Highfield among others.

“We will round off our day with the awards ceremony at our Chitungwiza campus and the event is likely to start at 6pm.”

Herentals was formed six years ago as part of the Harare Social League, and spent only three years in Division One after acquiring a franchise from Bindura United.
