FC Platinum go top

ZVISHAVANE - FC Platinum went a step closer to lifting their maiden Castle Lager Premier Soccer championship as they climbed to the log summit with a deserved 2-0 win over their relegation threatened neighbours Shabanie Mine in an exciting derby at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

Pure Platinum Play found their goals in the 62nd and 78th minutes through Rodwell Chinyengetere and Mkhokeli Dube to subdue a spirited Shabanie Mine had gone for five games unbeaten as they fought to escape relegation.

Dynamos’ draw at home to Tsholotsho and Ngezi Platinum’s draw to Chapungu leaves FC Platinum at the top of the log on 59 points with five games to go.

Norman Mapeza, who was honoured by his paymasters just before his 100th  game in charge of the platinum miners can now smell glory after failing agonisingly close in the past two seasons to win the league.

The game started with Shabanie enjoying an upper hand as they confidently exchanged neat passes inside the first 10 minutes but FC Platinum slowly clawed back into the game.

It was, however, the visitors who could have opened the scoring in the 18th minute, but Farai Mupasiri failed to connect a perfect cross from Tinashe Mupumha.

Dube on the other end came close in the 26th minute only for his effort to be blocked. Another FCPlatinum raid on Shabanie two minutes later saw Charles Sibanda’s effort pushed out for a corner, while Bret Amidu came close again in the 32nd minute but William Mapfumo stood in his way.

Shabanie were to rue their chances as they failed to utilise the glut of chances they created with the game going to the break deadlocked.

The ding-dong contest continued with Shabanie particularly wasteful in front of goal.

In the 62nd minute, two minutes after Shabanie had wasted yet another chance, Chinyengetere beat slotted home FC Platinum opener.

Shabanie tried to fight back with greater intent but Dube’s cushioned goal in the 78th minute buried the match as a contest.
