Herentals consolidate lead

HARARE - Herentals maintained their position at the top of the Zifa Northern Region Division One League following a hard-fought away 1-0 victory over Cranborne Bullets over the weekend.

Ugly it may have been, but at this stage of the season it is points that count as Herentals now enjoy a 19-point lead at the top of the table.

With such a significant lead, Herentals can legitimately allow themselves to start thinking about rubbing shoulders with the big boys in the top flight next season.

“We are not there yet,” Herentals coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva told the Daily News.

“All we can do is keep winning our games and we will get there eventually. There is no room for complacency especially at this stage of the season. We need to maintain the same hunger and motivation in our remaining matches.”

Herentals closest rivals Blue Swallows beat Chitungwiza 1-0 to move into second place on the log table with 42 points from 26 matches and will need more than a miracle to dislodge the School Boys.

Golden Valley dropped one step down the ladder to third place after they were handed a 1-0 defeat by Trojan.

Valley have amassed 40 points having played 25 matches with the other game still before the league‘s disciplinary committee.

In the Southern Region, log leaders Bulawayo Chiefs consolidated their spot at the top of the table following a 1-0 win over Talen Vision courtesy of a Moses Majika’s strike.

Chiefs enjoy a six point lead over second placed ZPC Hwange with 47 points from 17 matches.

Crucially for Chiefs they have two matches in hand over their rivals who are already on 19 matches.

Should Chiefs go on to win those outstanding matches they will open a 13 point lead at the top of the table.
