War veterans vow to de-campaign Mugabe

HARARE - War veterans yesterday vowed to de-campaign President Robert Mugabe ahead of  the watershed 2018 elections, saying they will make sure that the Zanu PF leader will lose by a big margin to the “people’s movement.”

Mugabe and his ruling Zanu PF party are due to contest a crucial general election next year against a coalition led by his long-time foe, Morgan Tsvangirai.

Briefing journalists in Harare yesterday, Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) chairperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said starting this week, teams which he described as the “A-Team”, will be going around the country to mobilise the grassroots against Mugabe and the G40.

This comes as Zanu PF is now bitterly-divided along two factions, on one side is a faction backing Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa — dubbed “Team Lacoste”  which enjoys support of the war veterans. On the other is G40, a group of Zanu PF Young Turks who have coalesced around Mugabe’s 52-year-old wife, Grace.

Relations between Mugabe and the former freedom fighters reached a new low over the weekend when the G40 faction and its alleged chosen presidential candidate Defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi called for the dissolution of Mutsvangwa’s ZNLWVA executive.

“This is a republic, there is a Constitution and the only person we know is the president, and he is not married for the first time, but for the second time,” Mutsvangwa said.

In 1996, after the death of his Ghanaian-born first wife, Sally, Mugabe married Grace Marufu, his former secretary

“During the war we did not know of any first family, the first family is my mother and father, this is nonsense,” Mutsvangwa fumed.

He called for an extraordinary Zanu PF congress to choose a new leader.

“We are now very clear that Mugabe is not the Zanu PF candidate for next year’s election. The candidate for Zanu PF is a G40 person by the name Sydney Sekeramayi and his spirit medium (Grace), that’s the candidate which they announced in public.

“When you cook fish and you want it to taste nice, you have to wrap it with an aluminium foil. Likewise, the candidature of Mugabe is an aluminium foil wrapping Sekeramayi. So we are not going to be fooled to go into an election where the candidate is a foil, no.

“So, Mr President, let’s go for an extraordinary congress immediately for people to choose their leader ahead of the elections.

“If he wins at the congress, he is a winner with us, but if he decides to go to elections as a G40 aluminium foil, I am sorry we will meet on the ground and then he will leave office with the alumni of a G40 defeat,” Mutsvangwa said.

He said veterans were declaring war.

“We declare war because we have always campaigned for Mugabe and others since the 1970s. This is the A-Team and we are going to see the mother of all elections, we are master organisers, we organised villages during the war.

“We are going to pit that impeccable record against the G40. This is the mother of all battles and we are declaring that this is the mother of all battles, today the battle has begun”, said Mutsvangwa.

shouldn't this fellow chris be made a visitor of government (arrested) for causing alarm and despondency or some such other contrived charge-this is zanu after all!! A week in jail should humble him i reckon! These war vets are old and tired and broke! Chris over-rates their worth!

Tom - 15 September 2017

Correct Chris over-rates warvets worth, the mobilisation he is referring too during the war was at gunpoint villagers had no option. No substance in his utterrances if anything he is begging to be called back at the feeding trough. They havent set the dogs at him yet coz.

Sinyo - 15 September 2017

This Chris guy is a very funy man. He thinks he has the balls. He speaks dictionary english filled with metaphors and expects everyone to listern. Just yesteryear when his plate was full of food he sang Mugabes tune, now its a different story. Let it be known to you MUSVANGWA that extraordinary or ordinary congress ZANU PF is finish and Klaar... We will send it to the dustbins of history and for the next century there will be no Zanu Pf. Mark my word

The stupid people are those who vote for Zanu (Ruzevha Front) expecting their lifestyles to change without working for it. I don't support the war veterans but if they are going around the ruzevhas undoimg what they did, its commendable. People must be free to associate or dissociate with any political party or leader. THAT is what is called freedom. Currently we have Zanu (RF)-created blackmail in the ruzevhas, not freedom.

Garrulous Mutsvangwa and his lot may soon find himself a political non entity if his attempt to organize the masses is snubbed an fails. Can he be allowed to hold rally easily, considering how MDC has been treated. He appears not to understand that politics is a game of numbers . He may be miscalculating his political clout and perceived support from the army leaders, who may be retired. Let us wait and see.

He has a point but its too late. Sooner rather than later he will be arrested for undermining the authority of the President. Usatambe neZANU. War veterans were used to beat our mothers and fathers and now they want to mobilize the same people they were beating. Zvakaoma zve Zimbabwe
