Fire guts Bata shop

HARARE - A fire has gutted a Bata shop at Govans Cornmarket at Bepswa Arcade in Norton.

Fire services were called to the fire on Sunday to find the building well ablaze.

Fire trucks battled to put the fire out. Officials were yet to establish what caused the inferno. Property owner Doctor Bepswa declined to comment yesterday, saying police were handling the probe. Police said investigations were underway, but said no one was in the building at the time of the fire.

But property worth thousands of dollars was lost. This comes after the Gweru-based shoe manufacturer, Bata Shoe Company, has just opened the Norton shop and two others in Murambinda and High Glen in a bid to increase its market share in the country’s leather industry.

The company has also resumed the refurbishment and modernisation of its stores which it had earlier stopped to evaluate successes of shops that had undergone renovations.

According to Ahm Ehsanuzzaman, the Bata managing director, they were also upgrading the Robert Mugabe Store in Harare to make it bigger and better to match international standards.
