Fans speak on Ntouba saga

HARARE - A huge debate has been sparked off in local football after Zifa on Monday rescinded the red card shown to Dynamos striker Christian Ntouba during Sunday’s match against Highlanders at Rufaro Stadium.

Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa and his referees’ committee quickly convened a meeting a day after the match where they came up with the decision.

The Daily News’ Godknows Matarutse and Brighton Goko took to the streets to hear the views of fans. Below are the excerpts.

William Bhasera, 34, Karoi

I’m a Dynamos fan and I think the decision by Chiyangwa was only fair given the fact that the referee failed to protect Ntouba on several occasions.

If anything the referee was supposed to have punished Peter Mudhuwa because he spent the entire game kicking Ntouba.

In fact that referee must be investigated for match-fixing. There is no referee in his normal senses who would let those nasty challenges on Ntouba go unchallenged.

I see nothing wrong with Chiyangwa’s decision.

Melody Nyabadza, 23, Ruwa

Well it’s quite a tricky issue. I thought Chiyangwa was supposed to deal with the referee not to nullify that red card.

Frankly speaking Ntouba deserved to be sent off and at the same time he was not protected on several occasions which led to the whole thing.

In my humble opinion, I think it’s the referee failed to handle the match completely and must be interrogated.

For me for Chiyangwa to nullify that card I don’t think it’s the right way to go about everything.

Reginald Mujeni, 49, Rusape

I’m a staunch Dynamos fan but looking at this issue I don’t think it was handled in a professional manner considering how other countries solve similar cases.

I think Zifa rushed to make a decision in such a short space of time. I don’t think there were enough consultations despite claiming to have done so. You see it now creates a lot of problems in the future.

If Dynamos go onto win the championship as they are going to do, people will remember it as if they got a helping hand from Zifa and looking at how the team is playing at the moment I don’t think there is any need of that.

The team is still going to win even in the absence of Ntouba. It’s not good for our football it’s very unfortunate that there is very little that can be done to this matter.

Brian Mabuyawa, 23, Westlea

These football leaders are killing our game and I hope something will be done to stop this nonsense.

Why can’t they deal with the referee? In as much as the referee was poor, nullifying the red card was not the answer but rather it creates problems.

Maybe it’s because Chiyangwa is said to be Dynamos fan. It’s scandalous! It’s actually unheard of.

I’m just hoping he will wake up to say I was joking because it’s indeed a joke.

Patuma Chibwanda, 23, Borrowdale

Chiyangwa is right. There should not be selective application of law in sport. For almost the entire match Ntouba was being harassed but the referee turned a blind eye on it.

And now Chiyangwa has acted, rightly so, people suddenly want to talk forgetting that Mudhuwa was the one who should have seen red first.

I think justice prevailed after all. Chiyangwa must also suspend that referee; these are the people who are killing our local game due to their poor officiating.

That referee does not deserve a place in our sport and must be dropped in the dust bin.

Dorcas Nyakuipa, 32, Kuwadzana

Chiyangwa is right; he now needs to deal with the referee. We all saw Mudhuwa kicking Ntouba throughout the game and it’s shocking that people are conveniently forgetting that.

Mudhuwa should have been sent off for an early shower way in the first half. He came predetermined to fight Ntouba.

Ntouba was left with no option because the referee failed to protect him and in such cases you will have to protect yourself.

So Chiyangwa was right and must punish that Highlanders fan masquerading as a referee.

I dont agree with the decision to rescind the red card but the committee was supposed to issue another red card to Muduhwa of Hghlanders. Failure to fairly handle matches of this high level will result in chaos in the stadium whereby fans threw bottles of urine, oranges etc... #Nyika yese irikufara

Chiyangwa is stupid. How can he support the kind of behavior exibited by Dynamos on September 10 at Rufaro Stadium. The match was being screened live on Supersport and its a shame and emberassing to the nation to see the whole technical bench of Dynamos infringing the pitch. As that was enough, kicking the other ball into the field whilst the other team is at advantage. Ntouba is a very good striker but on this day he tested the real taste of Zimbabwean soccer, its not cheap as he might have thought. After that kind of mess by Dynamos, Chiyangwa then proceeds to utter rubbish. Its a shame in this age to note that we still have tribalist in Zimbabwe, sometimes basic education is important, Chiyangwa is unlearned and a record failure in politics now he wants to spoil our game. Dembare was lost the game both in the field and technically thus why Mutasa became so emotional. Vote of no confidence on crazy Chiyangwa.
