'Rita Makarau must stick to one job'

HARARE - Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) chairperson Rita Makarau — who is also a judge of the Supreme Court and the secretary of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) — must make a choice of which particular job she would like to keep, Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC has said.

MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu said this untenable state of affairs flies in the face of well-established principles of good corporate governance that are meant to avoid conflict of interest, amongst other things.

“The MDC is deeply concerned by this anomalous state of affairs whereby ...Makarau occupies three crucial jobs at the same time. Particularly as we move towards the holding of elections in 2018, it would be more appropriate for ...Makarau to make a choice of which particular job she would like to keep,” Gutu said.

While Makarau was unreachable for comment yesterday, she has previously said that “the decision lies with the appointing authority (President Robert Mugabe) whether to remove me from any of the positions or not.”

Makarau promising a free and far election is like a Moslem promising you a great pork dinner. It can't.
