MUSICA 2017 comes alive

HARARE - Preparations for Musica 2017 (Mussica), the annual music festival organised by the Embassy of Italy, are at an advanced stage and will be running under the theme: The world coming together in Zimbabwe, the high profile international event will run from October 4 to 7 at the new Italian Club in Chisipite and at various other venues in the capital.

In a recent interview, the Ambassador of Italy to Zimbabwe Enrico De Agostini said the 10th edition of Musica will be bigger and better than ever before.

“This is not just due to a formidable line-up of international and local musicians but also to the enhanced level of collaboration between them, in Music as well as in Fashion.

“Indeed, the participation of Micasa from South Africa as well as Oliver Mtukudzi in the final concert promises to excite the fans.

“Italians too are participating with some of their jazz heavyweights, such as Roberto Gatto, rated Italy’s top jazz drummer, Raffaele Casarano, whose saxophone enchanted Zimbabwean crowds in 2014, and the long-awaited return of star guitarist Lorenzo Petrocca.

“I am so excited about Casarano’s collaboration with Dudu Manhenga because it incarnates the spirit of Musica, which is collaboration.”

De Agostini said that all participating artistes, imcluding Hope Masike, Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana, Victor Kunonga and Evicted are invited to collaborate with their international counterparts.

Collaborations at the festival sometimes happen in a more structured way while others happen spontaneously.

An example of a more structured collaboration during Musica will be provided by the Zimbabwean designers selected to collaborate with up-and-coming Italian designer Elisabetta Tentella.

Tentella, who is set to arrive in Harare this week, will cooperate with her Zimbabwean colleagues to create original designs based on the “Designers of Tomorrow” competition, which took place at Harare International Festival of the Arts 2017.

The Lynde Francis Trust and Zimbabwe Fashion International will organise this exciting aspect of Musica 2017.

Musica’s main venue is moving to a new location.

“The festival has grown,” De Agostini said, “and we need more space. As part of the 10 year anniversary we are moving the main stage to the new Italian club in Chisipite. It’s a great occasion to inaugurate this marvellous, new venue.”

One of Musica’s key objectives is to promote international understanding through cultural diplomacy.

Commenting on this aspect, the Ambassador said: “Cultural cooperation is about investing in long term relationships. It creates the basis for a more meaningful, future cooperation on all levels. Understanding between people involves dialogue and music is a universal language.

“It doesn’t matter which part of the world they come from, once people communicate through music and the arts, they can reach an understanding on other themes as well. This is the first step in any kind of cooperation, even at economic and political level.

“We have always maintained that no matter how much money you pour into a country, if there is no understanding of the values behind your cooperation, if the people of the two nations do not actually know one another at a deeper level, economic cooperation will only scratch the surface.”

Over the past 10 years, Musica has grown to become a major highlight on Zimbabwe’s cultural calendar and the high profile event is famous for stylish, corporate entertaining.

“We provide a fun filled environment that goes beyond just corporate entertainment, our main focus is on promoting the art of networking through cultural exchange. This is linked to what we do as an embassy, which is to foster economic cooperation between Italy and Zimbabwe.

“A lot of companies that did not know each other started doing business with one another after meeting at the festival.”

Musica is organised in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, Music Crossroads Zimbabwe, the Italian Club and Blaque Events.

The festival’s key sponsors include Salini Impregilo, Dandemutande, FBC Holdings Limited, MSC, Delta Corporation, Freight World, CRG Quarries, Illy, Safeguard, Progressive Insurance Brokers, Cresta Lodge, Optinova, Brands Africa, Specialist Hire, Find it Fast Digital Marketing, Danai Wines and Sound Vantastic Events.
