ZRU interim board unveiled

HARARE - Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) president Edward Siwela has challenged the interim Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) committee appointed by Sports minister Makhosini Hlongwane yesterday to work towards reviving the sport.

Former Sables wing Russel Karimazondo will be the new ZRU interim president while former president Themba Sibanda and Gateway School headmaster Tungamirai Mashungu are committee members.

Rugby administrators Judith Chiyangwa and Bongani Zamchiya are also members of the new interim board.

“The biggest task really is to restore sanity to rugby. We would like them in the interim to try and put rugby back into a firmer footing,” Siwela said.

“You are aware of course of what was happening — divisions — and as a consequence of that the national teams performance was on a slide and we would like that to be rectified.

“In terms of the SRC Act the interim commit that was appointed by the minister has full powers to run the affairs of rugby and to that end they have the authority to ensure all the structures under rugby are actually brought in line so that there is effective co-ordination of the sport.”

The previous ZRU board led by president Nyararai Sibanda and his two vice presidents Nody Kanyangarara and Tapiwa Mangezi were all suspended by the SRC earlier this month.

“We operate in terms of natural justice and in terms of those rules everybody should be given the opportunity to be heard,” Siwela said.

“The previous ZRU board was actually given that opportunity, they were formally written to, requested to furnish information with respect to the allegations that were levelled most of which were common knowledge in terms of what was happening.

“They reacted by not submitting any response. They could have formally written giving their side of the story or as happened in this case they could have chosen to respond through silence; either way the opportunity is furnished and the reaction is noted as response.”

In announcing the new board, Hlongwane said their term of office will be for the next six months.

“Following the suspension of the ZRU by the SRC with effect from August 8, 2017, I have on the recommendation of the SRC board appointed an interim committee in accordance with section 30 (2) of the SRC act (chapter 25:15),” Hlongwane said.

“The committee’s tenure shall not be more than six months and maybe renewed subject to the exigencies or demands of setting the ZRU on a functional trajectory.

“The terms of reference of the interim committee shall be as according to section 30 (3) of the SRC Act (chapter 25:15) and as elaborated by the SRC board.”
