Zim designer gets recognition

HARARE - Zimbabwean designer Farai Simoyi, who has previously worked with pop star Beyonce and hip-hop artiste Nicki Minaj, is one of two Zimbabweans that have been included in a just-released list of 100 top women in the world.

The list, compiled by the New York-based Global Connections for Women Foundation (GC4W), also includes Zimbabwe-born Elizabeth Nyamayaro who is a senior advisor to the executive director of UN Women.

Simoyi and Nyamayaro are joined in the star-laden list dubbed “GC4W Top 100 Women in the World” by global icons such as Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce, Bonang Matheba, Kris Jenner, and Melinda Gates.

Simoyi’s inclusion on the global list is a fitting recognition who first attracted international recognition when she was hired as a senior denim designer for House of Dereon, the clothing line belonging to Beyonce and her mother, Tina Knowles.

In an interview with ciaafrique.com, Simoyi, whose clothing label is called Farai, expressed her determination to make her brand a truly global one.

“I want to create emotion in the woman who is buying or wearing Farai. Think of how good it feels when you are shopping and you find that amazing dress, in your size, it fits perfectly in all the right places, and it’s for a great price; and you can think about is where you’re going to wear it to, with what shoes, with what purse, how do your hair, etc . . . that’s all emotion. And that’s what I want to create,” she was quoted as saying.
