Fireworks expected at Byo Chibuku Neshamwari

HARARE - More than 10 traditional groups are expected to clash in the Bulawayo Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival provincial contest to be held at Manor Hotel in Bulawayo tomorrow.

Sekunjalo maAfrica were winners of last year’s edition of the provincial contest which was hosted by Habane Bar in Esigodini. They represented Bulawayo at the national finals last year where they pocketed $5 000 after coming second.

The group that will emerge victorious tomorrow will walk away with $300 along with the ticket to represent Bulawayo Province at the national finals to be held at White City Stadium in Zimbabwe’s second largest city on August 5.

The second best group will walk away with $200 while position number three will take home $150.

Other provincial champions that have already confirmed their participation at the national finals are Goromonzi Arts (Mashonaland East), Chinyakare Traditional Dance Group (Mashonaland Central), Mufakose- based Culture Warrior (Harare), How Mine Chioda (Matabeleland South), Budiriro Cultural Arts (Mashonaland West), Chipolopolo Zambia Gure (Midlands) and Dzimbabwe Traditional Dance Group which will represent Masvingo Province for the second year running.

Last year, Redwing Beni Arinoti from Manicaland landed the prestigious annual Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival finals held in the City of Kings.

The 18-member dance group from Penhalonga near Mutare — which won the same competition in 1996 and 2007 — took the first prize of $7 000 with Bulawayo’s Sekunjalo MaAfrica pocketing $5 000 after claiming second position.

Harare-based Maramuro Agure landed third position and $3 000 in prize money.

Founded in 1963, Chibuku Neshamwari is sponsored by Delta Beverages through their Chibuku brand and co-ordinated by National Arts Council of Zimbabwe in partnership with Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association.
