Tsvangirai to address 'mother of all rallies'

HARARE - MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai is set to address the “mother of all rallies” in Gweru, which he will jointly hold with other opposition parties and civic organisations.

According to MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu, the rally has been cleared by the police.

He said the long-time President Robert Mugabe rival has invited members of other opposition political parties in the grand coalition — set to take Mugabe head-on in next year’s elections.

“...Tsvangirai...will give an insight into the progress made so far in the process of forming a coalition and he will also reiterate our call for electoral reforms as advanced by (National Electoral Reform Agenda) Nera,” Gutu said.

Tsvangirai, who is tipped to lead the grand coalition, is also expected to touch on the roadmap to next year’s elections and the need for the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) to expeditiously roll out the Biometric Voter Registration process.

“We expect the rally to be graced by some leading members of civil society who are also calling for a free and fair election next year as well as the urgent push for the formation of a grand coalition that will defeat the Zanu PF dictatorship in next year’s elections,” Gutu said.

“...other opposition political parties...will grace the rally in the spirit of solidarity.”

Tsvangirai — the only politician to beat Mugabe in an election hands down — is also expected to address another rally at White City Stadium in Bulawayo on June 21.

The rally is going to be attended by among other opposition political leaders Joice Mujuru, leader of the National People’s Party (NPP) and Welshman Ncube – president of the smaller MDC.

The resurgent MDC leader is currently involved in coalition talks with these opposition players as he makes another determined bid to topple Mugabe and his warring Zanu PF from power in the watershed 2018 polls.

He has since signed Memoranda of Understanding with Mujuru and Ncube in anticipation of the grand coalition.

Analysts have also consistently said Mujuru, whose liberation struggle nom de guerre was Teurai Ropa (Spill Blood), and whose late husband Solomon was the first black post-independence army commander, could provide the much-needed bridge that opposition parties have been missing to ensure the smooth transfer of power if they win the 2018 elections like they did in 2008.

Lets see how many people will attend as compared to Mugabe's rally yesterday in Marondera - which was a roadblock.

The people who are going to attend the rally obvious will be not be bused from other provinces as what happens with Mugabe rallies they will come within Gweru and Kwekwe and non of them is going to be forced to attend chesa mpamaaaa uMugabe kumele achaye phansi pasi ne zanu

The reality is people go to Mugabe rallies willingly. Some like yesterday even walked more than 20km just to be there. Nobody forced them to walk there. Buses are provided for those who WANT to attend & when the buses are full, they leave for the venue but other people follow on foot, in lorries, their own cars & even in scotchcarts. The MDC ALSO provide transport for their supporters even all the way from Harare. The MDC loses elections because they & their blind supporters depend & believe in their own delusional lies. Lets not fool each other here. The Mdc does not have the same support as ZanuPF & THAT IS EXACTLY THE VERY REASON THEY ARE DESPERATE FOR A COALITION. ZanuPF does not need a coalition because it can defeat every opposition party in Zimbabwe hands down. That is 100% FACT!

Taura hako. How can the MDC be more popular when they need a coalition to defeat Zanu?

Murewa - 4 June 2017

Kikikiki I like the way we quarrel over petty issues. With our so called high education standards, we are the worst lot. Voting has not started yet... please. Can we for once behave like brothers & sisters?

On friday in Marondera while Mugabe was busy saying nothing pple started streaming out and police had to try and stop them which they failed to do .If then someone thinks that zanu does not frog march pple to their rallies that person must be insane On the coalition zanu has a coalition ALREADY with zbc who spread lies on their behalf and never beam opposition rallies police disrupt and want clearance for opposition to address rallies and soldiers go fully armed to rural areas during elections to tell pple for zanu or else they will be all shot dead and their commanders always say they will never salute anyone who is not war vet . So why would zanu seek coalition with anyone with such support . in 2008 Mugabe was defeated by Morgan soldiers went into a killing spree of opposition supporters which at last rescued Mugabe from jaws of defeat .

Diibulaanyika - 4 June 2017

ZANU supporters making noise here know very well at Morgan rallies pple are not bused while theirs is to have rented crowds which follow Mugabe around the country we are not fools we know that .MUGABE IS FINISHED .Watched at mdc t rally it will be fully packed with pple from the same town where the rally will be taking place making the majority .

Tsvangirai has admitted ega that the MDC needs a coalition to defeat Zanu & yet you say MDC is bigger than ZanuPF. Stop being silly

Kwanayi - 4 June 2017

Clever - 4 June 2017

You cant fool yourselves into power. Your MDC party no longer has support & that is why it is begging to team up with other parties. Even my 10 year old son knows this

Say No More - 4 June 2017

If zanu has support it could be mentally disturb pple who are not aware of the nonsense caused zanu in this country bcoz they are mentally challenged . All sane people never support zanu even zanu has zapu as coalition so what is funny about political parties working together pasi na zanu yamadisinyongoro

ndega - 5 June 2017

John Farar , are you educated, schooled, learned or informed? Don't ask clear facts by GTI. Lets hope reporters will stop assuming that it will be a mother of all rallies when in reality its going to be a small barren and infertile girl lad of a rally.
