Musona out of Senegal clash

HARARE - Warriors star forward Knowledge Musona has been ruled out of Zimbabwe’s next game against Senegal at the ongoing 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Gabon after suffering a hamstring injury.

Musona has been one of the standout performers for Kalisto Pasuwa’s charges as they ended an 11-year absence at the continental’s biggest football showcase and had to be substituted 12 minutes into the opening game against Algeria which ended 2-2 on Sunday night.

The Warriors should count themselves unlucky after playing some excellent football having led for 81 minutes through goals from Kuda Mahachi and Nyasha Mushekwi only for Riyad Mahrez to rescue a draw for the Desert Foxes with his second goal of the match.

It was, however, the manner in which the Warriors missed the many scoring opportunities that came their way, which will remain a big worry for Pasuwa after Musona was ruled out of their must-win game against Senegal on Thursday.

Warriors team doctor Nick Munyonga said the Belgium-based striker needed at least seven days before he can return to action.

The KV Oostende forward is now likely to return to action in the clash against Tunisia on January 23.

“Musona sustained a mild right hamstring strain around the beginning of the match yesterday,” Munyonga said.

“On assessment, we feel there is no muscle tear. It is a grade one strain that we are going to make sure we are going to treat according to standard hamstring strain injury treatment modalities.

“One of the key things of that treatment is rest and obviously we are not going to rush that the player returns to training or playing.

“We are therefore working with a target to make sure that Knowledge is back to play for the third game of the tournament if he is to get better. We have noticed improvement.

“Obviously, players like any other person have different times in terms of healing and therefore it will be very difficult to be specific when he can return to play.”

Musona is arguably the best finisher in the Warriors frontline and his absence was greatly felt against the Desert Foxes.

He is going to be another big miss for the clash against the Lions of Teranga.

Pasuwa will, however, welcome back star central midfielder Marvelous Nakamba for the Senegal clash  as he was forced to sit out the Algeria game due to suspension.

The 22-year-old, who played a key role for the Warriors during the qualifiers, has been in impressive form at his Netherlands top-flight club Vitesse, which has seen him being linked with a move to England or Germany.
