Return of Sekurutau as he debuts at Saratoga

HARARE - African Roots Music singer and world renowned stone sculptor Bryn Mteki aka Sekurutau will every Friday hold a music concert at Harare’s historic nightclub, Club Saratoga in Highfield Harare while the other days would be offered to other bands who want to book the venue.

After touring the world for 16 years with success stories in America, Germany and the rest of Europe, Sekurutau is permanently back home where he has acquired and rechristianed the mighty Club Saratoga ‘The Haus OF Sekurutau’.

The singer said he was inspired to invest into the club by international music icon Jay`z who also has his own Club in New York USA.

Club Saratoga ‘The Haus OF Sekurutau’, the double storey nightclub is historic in that it was the venue for most black bands during the colonial era, uplifting and providing space for music giants like Thomas Mapfumo, The Four Brothers and Bhundu Boys among other yester year high profile music acts.

“This is my first concert in many years and over the time I have preparing for this come back. I have been touring and working hard, hence this investment at Club Saratoga. I am sure I am one of the few artists, if not the only one to acquire and run a nightclub that will also benefit other musicians who would want to book and perform there.

“This Friday (December 16) will mark ‘The Return of Sekurutau’ and a bira has been organised where I will perform alongside several musicians I have invited to grace the occasion,” said Sekurutau who has so far released several albums Kurauone,  Kuyaruka, Ndakura, Pfugama Unamate, Hamunyare,  Tsuro Magen`a, Sekurutau and Makarekare Part 1.

The dreadlocked musician has his hands full as he has acquired a vast business empire operating under the brand name BrynBrands with flagships such as Haus of Sekurutau, Chicken Haus, Pizza Haus, Creamy Haus, BrynBrands Commodities, Mana Mining Syndicate BryBen Motors, Sekurutau World Music, BrynBrands Supermarkets which comprise real estate, mining, retail supermarkets, bottle stores, butcheries, take-away restaurants, transport  and night clubs. “As an artist I am also into designing, hence the establishment of a clothing line which has been operational for some time now. We have clothing shops where we specialise in our own designs.

“My dream over the years has been to invest in Zimbabwe and after all these years globetrotting, I have finally settled back home where BrynBrands is now a leading brand.”

Sekurutau has always been an artist from a very young age and even after completing his ‘Ordinary Level’ he did not even bother collecting his results and up to now he does not know how he fared. “All I need is my art which has turned into a vast business empire. I started with fine art drawing at primary school before going into stone sculpting at 11 years under the tillage of my father Richard Mteki and my late uncle Boira Mteki.”

While he has won world-wide admiration as a stone sculptor exhibiting at high profile exhibitions, Sekurutau also launched the Aust-Mteki Foundation and runs several Sculpture Galleries in Europe.

“I was exposed to international lime limelight at an early age and was nomadic, a man of no fixed aboard.  In America it was more like home from Los Angeles to Chicago, from New Jersey to Memphis Tennessee, from New York to Washington DC.  In Europe Germany had become my other home with establishments in Frankfurt, Berlin Oelsnitz, Berlin Hamburg and Dusseldorf,” said Sekurutau.

The world-wide tours opened many doors for Sekurutau who in the process made friends with international singer R. Kelly. “R. Kelly has been a long-time friend and he is my inspiration when it comes to music. I also had the chance to meet various personalities including popular actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Wesley Snipes. From the world of sports I met football stars Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. I also met the great boxer Mike Tyson and former FIFA boss Sepp Blatter.”

Having been born in Highfileds, it makes sense that Sekurutau invests in Club Saratoga. “This club will be the platform for my musical revival; this is home because I grew up here.”

Sekurutau said his brand as a musician, stone sculptor and businessman was more important at the moment, hence engaging Laura Tatenda Tsonzi as his brand manager while his wife, former banker Patience Annie Mteki aka Ambuya is his personal manger.

“These two are important in developing my brand and as for my wife she follows in the footpaths of other personalities who have engaged their partners as managers, among them the likes of Sonia Rodney who has also managed his legendary husband Winston Rodney better known as Burning Spear and Rita Marley who was always on the side of her husband Bob Marley.
