Exhibition highlights the new world of technology

BULAWAYO - The National Gallery in Bulawayo is currently showing a unique exhibition which seeks to highlight how people feel they should portray themselves with the help of technology.

Titled Profile pic - Alter ego, the exhibition which was recently officially opened by award-winning visual artist Rashid Jogee, features ten artistes from Bulawayo and Harare.

The exhibition organised by a local arts organisation, House of Menka, will run till next year.

“The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the new world of technology in which we exist and reflect on our identity,” House of Menka director and exhibition curator Tafadzwa Gwetai told the Daily News.

He added that social media has transformed ordinary people into artistes.

“To also highlight how most people who are exposed to social media have gradually become artists. A profile picture is a visual element where people present themselves for people to view, like, share and to comment,” said Gwetai.

The exhibition curator said the exhibition makes people to review their identity and how they present themselves.

“The profile picture is something that is common in most social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp and a wide range of other social media,” said the House of Menka director.

He further noted that “As an artist and curator I saw this process to be very similar to that of artists where we create art forms with the aim to communicate and create dialogue,” said Gwetai.

Artists whose works are being showcased include Auntony Zinyange,Tinashe Vangani, Nomvuyiso Mabi, Wisdom Vangani, Talent Kapadza,Sibanengi  Dube, Knox Chimbetete, Aubrey Bango, Anusa Solanje and  Sky Solanje .
