Mighty Warriors up for Caf award

HARARE - The Mighty Warriors have once again been nominated for the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Women’s National Team of the Year award.

Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa are the other nominees for the award.

It is the second year running the Mighty Warriors have been nominated for this prestigious accolade.

Last year, Shadreck Mlauzi’s ladies missed out on the gong after it went to Cameroon for their performance at the Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada where they reached the second round.

This time around, the Mighty Warriors have been nominated for their performances at the Rio Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last August.

Although they failed to reach the second round of the tournament, Zimbabwe won many hearts for their entertaining and attacking play in a tough group with powerhouses Germany, Canada and Australia.

The Mighty Warriors were also unlucky not to make it out of the group stages of the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon last month.

Zimbabwe were denied a genuine goal in the clash against Egypt which could have rescued a point and boost their chances of making it to the semi-finals.

The winners will be announced at the Glo-Caf Awards Gala scheduled for January 5 in Abuja, Nigeria.

On the same night, Zimbabwean star forward Khama Billiat has been nominated for the Caf Player of the Year (Based in Africa) award.
