Redcliff appoint new town clerk

REDCLIFF - Redcliff Municipality’s finance director Gilson Chakauya has been appointed acting town clerk following the departure of Elizabeth Gwatipedza.

Gwatipedza, who was acting town clerk following the dismissal of former town clerk Daniel Matawu  on allegations of gross incompetence, has taken up a job as Gweru Town Clerk. Chakauya is going to hold the  position until the appointment of a substantive town  clerk.

A 6-4-0 town council vote on the  resolution confirmed the decision to select Chakauya interim  town clerk, who contested against engineer Tembani Kudhlande  and the housing director’s Christina Chagwiza in a  hard-fought election.

Acting chamber secretary Stan Muza  said: “Councillors are the ones who have appointed a  town clerk until the post is filled, they are also the ones  who will know when to fill the position.”

Mayor Freddy Kapuya said council had to fill in the position after Gwatipedza tendered in her resignation.

The outgoing Gwatipedza had served council in different capacities for 22 years.

“We received Gwatipedza’s  resignation last Thursday that is why we had elections to fill in the position so that we will have someone to be in an acting capacity until we find a substantive town clerk,” the mayor  said.

“We wish Chakauya well in the due capacity as the town clerk. We want to thank him for taking up the position,” he said.
