Nyamasvisva promises mbira treat

HARARE - Mbira star Wilfred Tichaona Mafrika, popularly known as Nyamasvisva, will feature in the Mbira Acoustix Night set for Chez Zandi-Bistro and Wine bar on Saturday.

The show is a Mbiravolution concert organised by the Legacy Trust in collaboration with ATH Audio Productions.

Nyamasvisva is the leader of one of Zimbabwe’s best mbira band, Mawungira eNharira. The seasoned mbira player was the founder member of Mbira DzeNharira, a band which played a key role in popularising and commercialising pure mbira sounds in Zimbabwe

Tomorrow, Nyamasvisva will exhibit his solo techniques on the mbira and voice. He will fiddle with the mbira playing a range of different genres of music on the instrument.

The veteran artiste has promised a great show.

“In Mawungira eNharira, I play the Nhovapasi (bass) Nhare type of mbira in the Dongonda tuning, but this Saturday, I will play different Nhare mbira.

“In addition to that, I will explain one or two misconceptions of the instrument and its music,” said Nyamasvisva, who has promised to deliver more than a traditional act.

“I will also not just play the traditional mbira songs that people are used to hearing when we play as a band which is mainly a traditional act.

“I have different music influences that I have come across. This show is a unique experience that I hope you won’t miss out, kana karaoke yacho toto ichaya zuvaracho (I am going to even take part in the karaoke),” said the Mawungira eNharira leader.

The Mbira Acoustix has previously featured Chengeto Brown, the granddaughter of nyunganyunga mbira master Dumisani Maraire and Tendex who played his mbira on an electric loop.
