'Drug addict' son allegedly kills mom

HARARE - A Midlands State University Horticulture student suspected to be battling a drug addiction allegedly fatally stabbed his mother on Sunday after she tried to counsel him.

Emmanuel Chiota, 22, of Kuwadzana 3, appeared before Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti facing murder charges.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court and remanded to December 6.

Prosecutor Peter Kachirika alleged that on November 20, the now-deceased woman was at home and decided to counsel her son, who is reportedly battling drug abuse.

The court heard that the accused’s father Bodimen Chiota was present as his wife talked to their son but later decided to leave to seek divine intervention for his troubled son.

Immediately after Bodimen left, the accused reached for wooden stools in the dining room and began assaulting his mother, the court heard.

The mother reportedly rushed to her bedroom but her son followed her.  He then allegedly stabbed her with a pair of scissors. She died on the spot. Emmmanuel was subsequently arrested.
