We are still pursuing Moyo: Zacc

HARARE - Politicians suspected of profiteering from corruption have embarked on a smear campaign aimed at letting themselves off the hook, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) claimed yesterday.

Zacc commissioner Goodson Nguni told a news conference in Harare that apart from Higher Education minister Jonathan Moyo, Zacc was also investigating scores of top government ministers but have kept the graft investigations under wraps because the accused are not “talkative.”

Nguni warned Moyo to steer clear of “smearing” their images in the media, warning they are not finished with him yet.

He spoke as a local daily carried a story this week claiming that two Zacc officers diverted $51 000 from an RBZ-funded project to send two officials to Hong Kong under unclear circumstances.

Nguni warned journalists to stop being used to write “lies” and “damaging” stories without basis saying he will not hesitate to sue scribes who take this route.

Nguni claimed, contrary to what was published in the media that Zacc was itself under investigation, the office of the president was very supportive of the commission.

Zacc has claimed to have exposed fraud at the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (Zimdef) allegedly perpetrated by Moyo and his deputy Godfrey Gandawa but the courts have stopped prosecution of the minister.

An investigations committee set by the Zanu PF politburo has also cleared Moyo of any wrong doing but Nguni insisted yesterday that the former Information minister had a case to answer.

Zacc says Moyo, through his personal assistant allegedly used close to $50 000 from the fund to purchase bicycles, which he distributed to his constituency as well as advancing himself a $24 000 loan which he claims he has repaid.

“Moyo has been tweeting big time, he is very happy, he thinks he has got those people but this is the truth . . . $16 000 from the $24 000 (he says he repaid ) was paid to Zimdef through Fuzzy technology, through Itai Manyere, and then back to Zimdef.
