Kanonge preaches peace

HARARE - Rosemary Kanonge was yesterday elected the new Zimbabwe Women Football chairperson following yesterday’s poll in the capital.

Kanonge, who is an assistant commissioner with the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, takes over from Elizabeth Langa.

She will sit on the Zifa executive committee.

The entire women’s football executive committee was elected unopposed with the exception of Luckmore Marufu, who edged Brightwell Kadenge 7-5 in an election to choose the male representative to the board.

Other members in the new committee include vice-chairperson Samukeliso Silengane, Barbra Chikosi and Samukeliso Ndlovu. There will be a by-election to fill the vacant post for the sixth committee member.

Kanonge said she would want to see all stakeholders coming together for the good of football while also stressing out the need to have the women football league resume as a matter of urgency.

“We need to address the issue of divisions first so that we move forward on a clean slate.

“We need to mend bridges and bring everyone together with a shared and goals...then work on the constitution,” Kanonge said in her acceptance speech.

“...We need to treat the issue of the resumption of the national league as a matter of urgency.

“We will sit down with all stakeholders and see how we can tackle this issue.

“We also need to have grassroots development starting from the regions.”

She also highlighted the need to win back the confidence of sponsors.

“Sponsorship is of paramount importance for us to achieve our goals, so we will work in hand with the president (Philip Chiyangwa) so that they help us in sourcing funding.

“We want to improve women’s football but again we need unity to achieve this.”
