Magaya security bashes bailiffs

HARARE - Court bailiffs who attempted to seize Walter Magaya’s property got the beating of their lives on Monday from the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries leader’s security team.

Police spokesperson Charity Charamba confirmed the incident saying three men had been arrested in connection with the offence.

“We have arrested three men from PHD for assaulting staff from the High Court who had gone to the church attempting to execute a court order,” Charamba said yesterday.

Harare lawyer Arnold Tsunga, who is brother to one of the court staff who were bashed by Magaya’s security, said the Sheriff’s officers were subjected to an unprovoked attack.

The Sheriff’s officials had arrived at the scene following up a case between Morden Bricks Properties and PHD Ministries under case number HC4474/16.

The court ordered that the Sheriff attaches property worth $14 320 plus interest and costs of execution for a debt that Magaya’s PHD Ministries owes to Morden Bricks.

However, as they sought to execute their duty, they were given a thorough beating by persons believed to be security staff of PHD.

They also had their vehicles “temporarily taken” only to be released to the Sheriff after “police intervened,” Tsunga claimed in a Facebook Post, in which he added that a report has since been made to Waterfalls Police Station.

Efforts to get comment from PHD communication liaison Admire Mango were fruitless yesterday as his phone went unanswered. He also did not respond to messages sent to his WhatsApp.

However, an irate Tsunga said the bailiffs were beaten with booted feet, clenched fists and open palms before his brother, identified as Tonde, was rescued by the police.

“Tonde was attended to at Harare (Central) Hospital where his treatment included pain killers and injections.

“An x-ray was also ordered and it seemed to show no fracture to the bones but injury to soft tissue as a result of being assaulted by blunt objects,” Tsunga said.

“This case shows how the rule of law has really been eroded in Zimbabwe. To have a person that I held in such high esteem as . . . Magaya running a gang of thugs who beat up court officials and innocent civilians really shows a sick mind that feels that they have somehow become above the law,” Tsunga fumed.
