Stars light up promoter's birthday bash

HARARE - If ever anyone needed proof of music promoter and businessman Cosmas “Cossy Rules” Daka’s immense popularity on the local scene, then they needed to be at Odyssey Hotel in Kadoma on Saturday night.

In appreciation of the help they have got over the years from the flamboyant personality who runs a company called Cossy Rules which has interests in mining and furniture, some of Zimbabwe’s favourite musicians volunteered to perform for free at the concert to mark the music promoter’s 35th birthday.

The artistes who performed included Suluman Chimbetu, Leonard Zhakata, Freeman, Progress Chipfumo, Peter Moyo, First Farai, Somandla Ndebele, Kapfupi, Mostaff, Tendai Dembo, Terry, Buddo Knoxxy, John Manyozo, Obvious Mutani, Phidza Matsveru and Carlos Green.

A delighted Cossy Rules said he had been pleasantly surprised by the support and selflessness shown by the musicians.

“The response from artistes shocked me. They all came out to support me and they were not expecting to be paid. Even the public address system we used belongs to Sulu but he did not charge me,” he said.

Cossy Rules added that the musicians’ gesture had encouraged him to keep on helping artistes

“I have a good working relationship with a number of artistes though some are difficult to engage. Musicians should cultivate a sound relationship with promoters because this will be mutually beneficial,” he said.

The music promoter conceded that the Odyssey Hotel event was his biggest birthday celebrations ever.

“I used to organise small gigs on my birthday anniversary but this year I have decided to go an extra mile,” he said.

Zhakata, whose tracks Zvinoda Nyasha, Zvine Mwaka and Madam Boss, off his latest album Mutunga Dzese, are topping several charts, was clearly one of the standout performers on the night along with Zimdancehall star Freeman.

The Mugove hit-maker gave a top-drawer act in the wee hours of Sunday with fans singing along as he dropped hit after hit.

In an earlier interview with the Daily News, Zhakata gushed praise on Cossy Rules.

“Cossy Rules has done a lot for my band as well as other bands and as a result we had initially planned a surprise birthday party for him but unfortunately he got to know about this and then he organised this event. This birthday bash is our opportunity to return the favour,” Zhakata said.

The packed Odyssey Hotel was also blown away by Freeman’s animated display particularly when he performed hits like Zvakaipa Dai Ndarega.

His presentation left fans asking for more but to no avail as he was rushing to South Africa for “some music business.”

I have been always an ardent fan of Zhakata and i will forever be.I am ready to defend Zhakata whenever the armchair critics throws their rant on Zora Music icon.
