Norton has been an eye-opener

EDITOR — Now that the Norton by-election has come and gone we need to take stock. Firstly congratulations to Temba Mliswa and those Norton citizens who were brave enough to stand up to Zanu PF.

There is no need to congratulate anyone for having woken up to how useless any Zanu PF candidate would be. The vast majority have known this for years — just been too scared to say/vote so.

So point one, people are getting over their fear of the terrorist tactics of Zanu PF unless the party moves into kill mode in 2018, as in 2008, and the world stands back once again.

2. The ZRP will continue to be biased until the cows come home.

3. Zanu PF candidates and their supporters will continue to use foul means and keep on lying about not using violence, etc, when it is so open and blatant.

4. Zanu PF has now openly admitted to stealing hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ dollars to fund its programmes, and not one of them has any conscience about this wholesale theft and its contribution to the ruination of the economy.

5. Zanu PF has openly admitted that their members have impunity to do anything they wish outside the laws of the land, i.e. they have no respect for the Constitution.

6. The Zanu PF president and all  MPs only serve the interests of Zanu PF supporters and do not represent the citizens of Zimbabwe. They do not lay claim to being a national government.

7. They have openly boasted that their party is above the government.

How do we react, given these open and blatant revelations?

Firstly, we need to fortify ourselves against the terrorist tactics of Zanu PF and stand steadfast in the knowledge that God will save us if we are resolute. We need to appeal to the international community, especially our fellow Africans, to not allow a repeat of the 2008 killings in the lead up to any future elections.

The 2018 elections can only be held by organisations like Sadc or the UN to have any credibility.

The opposition should discontinue any further discussions with Zimbabwe Electoral Commission  (Zec) as it only adds to the window dressing of their part in the rigging process.

If Zec was serious, it should have declared the Zanu PF candidate’s campaign as unlawful and had him disqualified. Now that Mliswa won, Zec will hope everyone will forget this massive dereliction of their duty as the body given the task of ensuring that elections are credible.

We must get Sadc or the UN to send in peacekeepers to police our elections to ensure the law is upheld in all instances. Our own security organs have shown their partisanship. Torture camps must never be allowed to be established, let alone run by soldiers and CIO operatives.

The electorate must stand up and be prepared to counter any violence perpetrated by Zanu PF and come to the protection of any person being beaten for opposing Zanu PF.

All taxpayers should withhold any further payments to Zimbabwe Revenue Authority until a full audit has been done and Zanu PF has repaid all looted money.

If Themba Mliswa won the Norton constituency without the electrol reforms, then there is no reason why Mdc-T can't participate in elections.
