Sports journalists condemn ZC

HARARE - The Sports Journalists Association-Northern (Spoja-N) has slammed Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) for refusing to accredit some journalists from covering the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka.

Journalists from the Daily News and other independent media houses were barred from covering the series.

“Spoja-N has learnt with great disappointment that some of our members were denied entry at the Harare Sports Club to cover Day-One of the Test match between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka,” Spoja-N said in a statement.

“The journalists had followed proper procedure in applying for accreditation and, quite disturbingly, they had not received their venue access cards from ZC by match day.

“The way our members were treated at the gates was humiliating and demeaning, to say the least. As stakeholders in the sports industry, Spoja-N is utterly disgusted by the blatant lack of professionalism demonstrated by ZC.”

The grouping made up of sports writers from both print and electronic media added: “It’s even despicable that some administrators/organisations are still trapped in such barbaric practices in this era.

“Bona fide journalists should be allowed to do their work without undue hindrance. Henceforth, we expect cooperation and mutual respect from ZC, otherwise we would be forced to take up the issue with higher authorities.”
