SA girl spinner headlines burnout weekend

HARARE - South African teenage girl Kaylin Olifant will be the main centre of attraction at Saturday’s Summer Bounce Burnout spin event scheduled for Borrowdale Race Course in Harare.

The 15-year-old girl from Kimberly is set to be the first female ever in this particular event to showcase her spin ingenuity in the male-dominated event which makes the weekend event a must- attend show for everyone.

Olifant, who ventured into spinning as a scrawny 10-year-old, is rated as one of the top spinners in South Africa. One of her spectacular trademark stunts is climbing up and down, moving out and back in through the window while her car will be spinning on its own.

“I was taught spinning by my father when I was 10-year-old and since then I have never looked back. Today, I can compete with the professionals,” Olifant told awe-struck spectators last year.

Legendary local spinner Isaac Mayor, better known as Fat Cat in burnout circles, has urged spectators to come in big numbers to witness the country’s biggest spinning event.

“This is no doubt the biggest spin show on the land and with Kaylin being part of this year’s proceedings I am sure no one would want to miss a thing.

“She is going the be the first female spinner the show has ever hosted which is a positive development particularly at a time like this when we have just celebrated the Day of the Girl Child. Whatever men can do, women can do if not better,” Mayor told the Daily News adding that the event will be a competitive one.

“We also have other talented spinners competing under the banner Team Fat Cat, Team Snap On, New Boyz and many more. This is an opportunity to watch some breath-taking manoeuvres by top class spinners in this burnout extravaganza.”

A burnout, also known as a peel out or power brake, is the practice of keeping a vehicle stationery and spinning its wheels, causing the tyres to heat up and smoke due to friction and its origins can be traced to drag racing.

Burnout contests are adjudicated on crowd response, with style and attitude being important factors.

Such contests are particularly popular in Australia and North America.
