Soldier, colleagues up for possessing fake money

HARARE - Luck ran out for a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) lance corporal and four of his accomplices who are suspected to be part of a syndicate that is circulating fake United States dollars when they were busted while stashing $1 800 fake notes.

Kudakwashe Gumbeze, 28, appeared before Harare magistrate Victoria Mashamba jointly charged with Elias Maendese, 26, Patrick Kabinda, 38, Sydney Mugugu, 36, and Innocent Chiurairwe, 29.

The group is facing charges of being found in possession of articles for criminal use.

They are currently out on $50 bail each and were remanded to October 19.

Prosecutor Tariro Gwatidzo told the court detectives received information that the accused were in possession of counterfeit US dollars.

It was alleged that the detectives managed to arrest Maendese, Kabinda and Mugugu at Joina City in Harare.

Maendese was found in possession of 16 fake $100 notes which were stashed in a black diary on the driver’s door panel.

This is much bigger than the five people arrested. The police and ZACC should spread their nets wider. This will get very interesting.
