UZ graduand protesters freed

HARARE - Three University of Zimbabwe graduands, who stunned President Robert Mugabe during Thursday’s graduation ceremony as they waved placards demanding jobs, have been freed after paying $10 fine each.

The three, who included former Students Representative Council (SRC) president Tonderai Dombo, Zibusiso Tshuma and one Alex were arrested by secret police as they protested government failure to provide jobs.

Yearly, thousands of graduates are thrown on the ever-growing jobless heap and the unprecedented protests in front of Mugabe was a huge embarrassment to the nonagenarian — whose government promised to create 2,2 million jobs in 2013.

Writing on his Twitter account, Higher and Tertiary Education minister Jonathan Moyo ominously tweeted that Dombo’s actions could prove costly.

“Just because one is  . . . Dombo does not mean they should throw stones everywhere anytime. Disrupting a graduation ceremony can cost a degree!” said Moyo.

During the graduation ceremony Dombo and others stood up holding small placards denouncing Mugabe and his Zanu PF government.

Zimbabwe National Students Union spokesperson Zivai Mhetu said that the student’s body was very disturbed by Mugabe’s actions of suppressing legitimate concerns by the students.

Mhetu said Dombo was not only expressing himself but also the pent-up anger and frustrations of every graduate.

“As students, we are fed up with the prevailing situation where we know that when we complete our studies we are not going to add to the figure of the country’s labour force; we are going to add to the statistics of unemployed people in Zimbabwe.”

“The State should take what happened today (Thursday) as a turning point from the docile approach the once vibrant student movement in Zimbabwe had taken in the last couple of years.

“As long as the issue of unemployment has not been addressed, the government should suspend these graduation ceremonies.

“There is absolutely nothing ceremonial about capping a graduate to become a loafer,” Mhetu said.
