School Bands 2016 kicks off today

HARARE - Top school bands will battle it out on today at St John’s College in a contest set to kick off at 10am.

The schools that will feature in the Musica Battle of the School Bands 2016 include Arundel School, Midlands Christian College, Music Crossroads Academy, St George’s College, St. John’s College and ZRP High School.

The competition, which has been running for the three years, is part of Musica, an annual musical festival that is organised by the Embassy of Italy in Harare.

It is part of the embassy’s cultural programme whose objective is to foster the development of music skills among young and emerging artistes while providing them with opportunities for exposure and growth.

The participating school bands are required to present one original song and their own rendition of a popular song.

This year the contest will focus on selected musical genres that include Blues, Afro-pop, Rock, Jazz, Reggae, Alternative Reggae, Country, Soul and Rhythm and RnB.

An experienced jury will judge the performances based on lyrical content, rhythm, innovation, clarity, overall musical performance, and stage presence, interaction with the audience, appearance, originality and audience response.

The winning school bands can win a range of prizes which include a recording contract for the top band’s original song, air play on ZiFM and cash.

In addition, the top three bands will be afforded the opportunity to perform on the main stage at the Embassy of Italy during Musica 2016 alongside established international and local artistes.
