All set for Marimba festival

HARARE - Over 40 schools will take part in the third edition of the Tambarimba Marimba Music Festival set for Long Cheng Plaza on Saturday.

Festival director Don Chidavaenzi told the Daily News that this year’s edition would feature 22 high schools and 18 primary schools.

“Our festival specialises in marimba music. In fact, we organise and host the biggest marimba music festival in Zimbabwe attracting over 40 marimba bands from various schools and adult bands and a big audience.

“The theme of the festival is ‘Empowerment through Marimba’ as we endeavour to ensure that talented but disadvantaged students and youths derive benefits from their talents,” said Chidavaenzi

According to the festival director, the event is organised once a year by Tambarimba Arts Organisation which was formed in 2011.

“Apart from organising the marimba festival, we have over the years been involved in a number of activities like marimba workshops for teachers, training marimba in pre-schools, marimba instrument manufacturing, hosting the culture week launch in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe. “We also facilitated the participation of eight Zimbabwean marimba groups in the international marimba festival held in South Africa in July this year,” he said.

Last year, winners were Watershed in the high schools’ category while Gokwe St Agnes School was the winner in the primary schools’ section.
