Mighty Warriors in tough draw

HARARE - The Mighty Warriors have been placed in a tough group for the 10th edition of the Africa Women Cup of Nations (Awcon) at the draw conducted in Yaoundé, Cameroon, last night.

Shadreck Mlauzi’s charges were drawn in Group A were they will clash with hosts Cameroon, Egypt and South Africa.

Group B is made up of Nigeria, Mali, Ghana and Kenya.

The Awcon finals will run from November 19 to December 3. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals.

As part of their preparations for the tournament, the Mighty Warriors will play Egypt in an international friendly match at Rufaro Stadium tomorrow.

Mighty Warriors assistant coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda acknowledged they had been paired in a tough group but remains confident of doing well.

“It is definitely a tough group if one analyses all the teams that we have been paired against,” Sibanda said.

“I think for us, we will be the team to beat since we are coming from the Olympics. Everyone will want to beat us and definitely it will be difficult for us.”

Sibanda added: “We just need thorough preparations. We have a lot of work to do in assembling a team that will participate there. We have some players who returned from Rio injured so there is need for us to try some new players as we go ahead.

“We are looking forward to give a good account of ourselves. As you approach any tournament you always want to go far and we are looking forward to do the same.”
